Howard Hill

Howard Hill (* 13. November 1899 in Wilsonville , Alabama ; † 4. February 1975 in Birmingham , Alabama) was an American archer and technical consultant for cloak-and-dagger - Hollywood films and actors.

Sports

Hill was among the best archers in the late 1920s and 1930s . He is said to have won the most archery tournaments to date, 196. At Auburn University , he had played basketball and soccer .

Movie

In 1938 Hill became an archery advisor in Robin Hood, King of the Vagabonds, and was an archery double for Errol Flynn , with whom he was also friends. Hill managed to cut an apple apart with the bow from a great distance. In the film he also had a minor supporting role as the shooter "Owen the Welshman". He was a technical consultant in other films such as Colorado .

In the short film Sword Fishing from 1939, which he co-produced , Hill played himself in the lead role. He fished a fish with an arrow. The narrator was the future US President Ronald Reagan and the film was nominated for an Oscar for best short film.

Awards

In 1972, Hill was one of the first to be inducted into the Archery Hall of Fame . The arrow in the comic series Green Arrow is named after him.
