Howdy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Howdy is an English and American greeting that originally meant “how are you?” But now simply means “hello”. It is a contraction of How do ye [old for: you ] and used to appear in numerous spelling variants.

It is attested in English since the 16th century. It is now considered out of date in Great Britain, but the greeting lives on particularly in the US states of Arizona , Idaho , New Mexico , Nevada , Oregon and Texas, as well as in the US country , western and trucker scenes . The term also coined a regional radio broadcast by MDR 1 (Radio Thuringia) and 911 - your talk show on Energy .

Howdy was also the name of one of the mascots for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada.
