Hu Die
Hu Die ( Chinese 胡蝶 , Pinyin Hú Dié , W.-G. Hu Tieh , born Hú Ruìhuá 胡瑞華 / 胡瑞华 ; * 1907 in Shanghai ; † April 23, 1989 in Vancouver , Canada ) was a Chinese actress with roots from Heshan . She was named Queen of the Canvas and Ms. Butterfly Hu .
Life
As a teenager, Hu Die attended Gu Kenfu ( 顧肯夫 / 顾肯夫 ) drama school . In 1925 she made her film debut with Complaints / Qiushan Yuan ( 秋扇 怨 ). Until 1927 she appeared in several film adaptations of Chinese legends with various film companies, including as a snake woman in 1926 in The White Snake / Baishe Zhuan ( 白蛇傳 / 白蛇传 ) and in 1927 as a lady of the camellia in New Camellia / Xin Chahua ( 新 茶花 ).
Hu Die was employed by the well-known Mingxing film company from 1928 to 1937 and experienced the high point of her career during this time. In the first Chinese sound film, Song Girl Red Peony / Ge'nü Hong Mudan ( 歌女 紅 牡丹 / 歌女 红 牡丹 ), by Zhang Shichuan , she played a woman who was oppressed and abused by her husband in 1941. Hu performed frequently with director Zhang. Her best acting performance is the portrayal of two twin sisters - a poor peasant woman and a mistress of a military commander - in the film Sister Flowers / Zimeihua ( 姊妹花 ) 1933 by Zheng Zhengqiu . The film was one of the most commercially successful Chinese productions of the time.
Because of the occupation of China by the Japanese , she emigrated to Hong Kong , where she only made a few films again from 1946 onwards. One of her last films was Street Boys / Jietong ( 街 童 ) from 1960.
In 1975 she moved to Canada.
