The composer and musician Hubert Engels (1824-1891)

Hubert Engels (born August 2, 1824 in Bonn , † September 8, 1891 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) was a German music director , composer and violinist .

Live and act

Hubert Engels was born in Bonn in 1824 as the son of a piano maker . After graduating from high school, he studied violin and music theory at the Berlin Conservatory and the Paris Conservatory. His teachers included Karl Friedrich Rungenhagen , Ferdinand Ries and the French violinist Jean-Delphin Alard .

As a violin virtuoso, Engels was a sought-after guest soloist and went on extensive concert tours at home and abroad. He found his first permanent position in 1849 as concertmaster in London, where he also met his future wife Laura Howell. After a three-year stay in England, he first returned to Bonn in order to settle in Mülheim an der Ruhr in 1853 as a private teacher for violin, voice and piano. Mülheim's musical life hardly existed at that time and was limited to the existence of a few choirs and an instrumental association. With the bundling of the existing music associations and the organization of concert series, Hubert Engels founded the public musical life in Mülheim an der Ruhr. In 1879 he was awarded the title of Royal Music Director for his services .

Engels also made a name for himself as a composer. His oratorio The Downfall of Keris was premiered in 1861. Further works are The 8th Psalm for soloists, choir and orchestra (1857), a cycle of 9 traveling songs and various string quartets .

In 1889 Engels had to give up his activity as music director and conductor because of a serious eye problem. He died on September 8, 1891 at the age of 68. His son of the same name - Hubert Engels junior - made a name for himself as a hydraulic engineer around the turn of the century.
