Hudson formula

The Hudson formula is an empirically derived equation used in hydraulic engineering and coastal engineering for calculating revetments . The formula was derived in the 1940s and 1950s from a series of experiments at the United States Army Corps of Engineers ' Waterways Experiment Station research facility in Vicksburg, Mississippi .

With the help of the Hudson formula, the required mass of a stone in kilograms in a revetment can be determined depending on the design wave height in meters (usually the significant wave height ) so that the revetment is not damaged if this wave height is attacked. Further parameters in the equation are the density of the stone material and the water (each in kilograms per cubic meter), the slope of the bank slope , as well as a dimensionless, empirically determined factor of the stone shape, stone material and wave shape.
