history

Hugel et Fils in Riquewihr.

The Hugel house was founded in Riquewihr in 1639 by Hans Ulrich Hugel, who left Switzerland during the Thirty Years' War .

Since 1575 it was forbidden in Riquewihr to plant and raise other vines than the noble grapevine under threat of a fine . This allowed the city to produce the most renowned wines of the Holy Roman Empire until the early 17th century . During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hugel family consolidated their regional reputation through their competence and claim.

In the period between the French Revolution and the war of 1870 , many vineyards in Alsace were abandoned. The occurrence of powdery mildew , downy mildew and phylloxera caused a decline in the quality of the wines from Alsace. In 1902, Émile Hugel settled in the center of Riquewihr. After the end of the First World War and the annexation of Alsace to France, clearly defined quality standards based on the system of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée were created, which regulate that the properties of the products should remain approximately the same. Émile Hugel became the protagonist of this quality philosophy.

Wines

The house "Hugel et fils" divides its wines into six classes: Hugel qualité, Hugel tradition, Hugel jubilé, Hommage à Jean Hugel, Hugel vendanges tardives et Hugel sélections de grains nobles.

Four wines from the Hugel et fils production range.
