Hugh C. Howey (* 23. June 1975 in Charlotte, North Carolina ) is an American science fiction - writers . He became known for the success of his silo trilogy, which he published as an e-book in the Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing program from 2013 to 2015 without a publisher .

Despite lucrative offers, Howey decided against the sale of his e-book rights to the Silo series for the US market. Piper Verlag secured the rights for the German market , including the e-book rights. Howey sold the film rights to 20th Century Fox . Ridley Scott and Steven Zaillian will be commissioned to write and direct the film .
