Hugh Marwick

Hugh Marwick (born November 30, 1881 on Rousay , Orkney , † May 21, 1965 in Kirkwall ) was an Orcadian scholar who was known for his research on the Norn (the old local language on Orkney).

He received his master's at the University of Edinburgh , where he also received his PhD for his work on the orkadische Norn 1926th While researching and writing, he was the director of the Kirkwall Grammar School (then called Burgh School). He was appointed director in 1914 after teaching in Lancashire for several years . He remained director of the school until 1929. He then became chairman of the Orcadian Education Committee until 1946.

Marwick was one of the founders in 1922 and for 17 years also secretary of the Orkney Antiquarian Society (Eng .: Orkadische Antiquarian Society ). During this time he published several articles. He was also a member of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (Engl .: Society of Antiquaries of Scotland).

In 1965 he was appointed officer of the Order of the British Empire .
