Hugh Owen Thomas (* 1834 in Tyn Llan / Bodedern , Anglesey ; † 1891 in Liverpool ) was a British surgeon and orthopedist .

Life

In Wales -born Hugh Owen Thomas came from a family of medical assistant with diseases of musculoskeletal system treated ( Bonesetter ). He studied medicine in Edinburgh and London from 1854 , but soon after graduating in 1857 he settled in Liverpool, where he mainly worked as a general practitioner in poor neighborhoods. In 1891 he died of pneumonia.

Thomas set significant impulses in the treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, which is why he is known as the founder of orthopedics in Great Britain. Thomas was a staunch advocate of bed rest for tuberculosis and broken bones . He developed the Thomas splint , which was used to immobilize hip injuries and diseases (and which was later able to greatly reduce mortality from femoral fractures during World War I ). The Thomas collar allowed patients with tuberculosis of the cervical spine to have limited mobility. The Thomas handle named after him enables the detection of a flexion contracture in the hip joint. Together with the pathologist John Hughes Bennett , he continued to postulate concepts for treating tuberculosis through an abundant supply of fresh air.
