The Hugo Island ( French Ile Victor Hugo ) is an isolated island off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located around 60 km southwest of Cape Monaco in the southwest of Anvers Island . The island is 1.5 km long and has several stony bays and offshore cliffs on its east side .
Its discoverer is probably the Norwegian Karl Julius Evensen (1851-1924), captain of the whaler Hertha , who operated between 1893 and 1894 in the waters around this island. Participants in the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1903-1905) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot made a mapping in 1904. Charcot named it after the French writer Victor Hugo (1802-1885), grandfather of Charcot's first wife Jeanne (1869-1941).
