Hugo Eberhardt (born February 21, 1948 in Landl , Styria ) was director of TÜV Austria from 1994 to February 2013 and chairman of the board of TÜV Austria Holding AG from 2007 to February 2013 .

education and profession

Eberhardt attended the fourth Bundesrealgymnasium in Graz, where he graduated in 1966. In 1967 he began studying technical chemistry at the Technical University in Graz , which he completed in 1973 with a degree in engineering. From 1973 to 1977 he was an assistant at the Institute for Inorganic Chemistry at TU Graz . In 1977 he received his doctorate with excellent results as a doctor of technical sciences.

In 1977 he joined the Technical Monitoring Association in Vienna at the Wels site, where he was entrusted with the establishment and management of the Institute for Environmental Protection Technology and Technical Chemistry.

In 1990 he took over the management of the entire state-authorized research institute of the Vienna Technical Monitoring Association in Vienna.

In 1994 Eberhardt was appointed head / director of TÜV Austria (formerly the Technical Monitoring Association Vienna). After he initiated the reorganization of the company in 2007, Eberhardt was appointed Chairman of the Board of Management of TÜV AUSTRIA HOLDING AG. In his nineteen-year tenure as director and chairman of the board, he founded or acquired more than 25 subsidiaries in Germany and abroad, tripling the size of the company and increasing foreign sales from around 1% to 25%. Thus, TÜV AUSTRIA had risen to become an internationally active group.

As a patron of the arts, Eberhardt invited well-known artists such as pianists Paul Badura Skoda and Jörg Demus to the TÜV Forum to give concerts in the TÜV Forum. In addition to these world-famous artists, many artists were invited to show off their skills with jazz concerts, classical concerts, vernissages and cabaret evenings, thus building a bridge from technology to art.

On February 28, 2013, Hugo Eberhardt, CEO of TÜV AUSTRIA HOLDING AG, was officially retired by the Supervisory Board after 36 years of intensive work for TÜV and after 19 years at the helm of the company.

From 2013 to 2017, Eberhardt compiled an extensive chronicle of the development of the TÜV company from its foundation in 1872 to 2017.

More functions

Since 1990 Eberhardt was Austria's representative in Eurolab (European umbrella organization of testing laboratories), in whose establishment he was also involved. After 25 years of active work, Eberhardt was bid farewell at the Eurolab General Assembly in Istanbul. He was also a co-founder of austrolab (national representation of Eurolab in Austria) in 1991 and has been president of this company since then. By the time he left the company in 2016, he and several co-presidents had developed austrolab into an important Austrian institution.

Eberhardt has been actively involved in national (ON, ASI), European (CEN) and international standardization in the areas of environmental protection and conformity assessment since 1978. From 1992 he was a member of the delegation or head of the delegation of the Austrian Standards Institute (ON, ASI) in ISO CASCO and worked actively on important standards until 2014. Because of his active role in this body, he was also appointed to the “Chairman Policy and Coordination Group” for two terms. After various functions in CEOC International (since 1986), he was elected President of this important international umbrella organization of independent conformity assessment bodies (testing, inspection, certification) in 1999. In this role, he worked intensively until 2011 on the promotion of technical safety, especially at European level, but also to keep the quality of the associated important services (testing, inspection, certification) at a high level. To this end, he maintained intensive contacts with important European institutions.

In 2008 he was elected President of the Austrian Society for Non-Destructive Testing - ÖGfZP. He held this position until 2016.

Since 2008, Eberhardt has been Vice President of the Society of Friends of the Technisches Museum Wien .

In 2010 Eberhardt was accepted as a member of the Presidential Council of the Austrian Standards Institute / Austrian Standards International (ASI). In 2019 he left this high-profile body.

Honors

Because of his services to technical safety, he was awarded the professional title of "Technical Councilor" in 2003.

In 2009 Eberhardt was awarded the Great Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .

In 2011, Eberhardt was elected Honorary President of CEOC International for life at the General Assembly in Warsaw.

For his services as president of austrolab over 26 years, Eberhardt was elected honorary president of this association for life in 2016.

Eberhardt was named an honorary member of this organization in 2019 after he left the Presidential Council of Austrian Standards International (ASI).
