Hugo Falcandus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hugo Falcandus was a southern Italian historian from the second half of the 12th century.

Life

Hugo Falcandus obviously had in-depth knowledge of what was going on at the royal court in Palermo and also had the opportunity to inspect files. The author's name "Hugo Falcandus" has only come down to us in a print from the 16th century. There is no generally recognized knowledge about his origin, life dates or his affiliation to one of the political groups in the Norman Kingdom.

The most important work ascribed to him is the Liber de regno Sicilie , which depicts the history of the Kingdom of Sicily between 1154 and 1169. The very negative portrayal of King Wilhelm I had a strong influence on research for a long time. In the handwritten records, the text is accompanied by a historiographically interesting letter to a chamberlain of the Church of Palermo from the time of crisis in the Kingdom of Sicily after the death of Wilhelm II .

In research, several attempts have been made to link the author to a well-known contemporary name (for example with the Sicilian Ammiratus and poet Eugenius of Palermo or Hugo Foucaud, Abbot Hugo V of Saint-Denis ). In 2008 Alexander Franke put forward the thesis that the historical work was written by Petrus von Blois , who should therefore be equated with Hugo Falcandus. Petrus had spent some time at the Sicilian royal court and, according to Franke, was so disappointed with the development there that he anonymously expressed his criticism in the history. However, this view was resolutely contradicted by Rolf Köhn in an essay from 2011, accusing Franke of methodical and factual errors; Köhn, however, suspects the aforementioned Hugo Foucaud behind “Hugo Falcandus”.
