Hugo Marquardsen

Hugo Marquardsen (born February 2, 1869 - † May 17, 1920 ) was a geographer at the Reich Colonial Office .

In 1889 he joined the 2nd Hessian Infantry Regiment No. 82, where he was promoted to adjutant in 1893. From 1897 to 1900 he was a topographer and interpreter for Russian at the War Academy.

In 1901 he was assigned to the Foreign Office and did a ten-month training course in astronomical longitude and latitude at the Göttingen observatory with Leopold Ambronn in preparation for colonial deployment. In 1902/1903 he took part as an astronomer in Cameroon on the "Yola-Tschadsee border expedition" with Franz von Stephani under the direction of Hans Glauning .

From 1904 to 1907 he served again in his regiment. In 1908/09 he studied geography at the University of Göttingen, where he did his doctorate under H. Wagner with the thesis The surface design and hydrography of the Saharan-Sudanese drainless area . In 1908 the Reich Colonial Office employed him as an unskilled worker. In 1911 he succeeded Alexander von Danckelman here . From 1912 he published the communications from the German protected areas . In 1917 he was appointed secret councilor and lecturer in the Reichskolonialamt.

He died of a serious illness.
