The Huka Falls are waterfalls of the Waikato River in the Taupo District of the Waikato region on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The Huka Falls is located 3.5 km north of the city Taupo and 6.8 km downstream from Lake Taupo removed.
description
The waterfalls consist of two cascades with a 235 m long rapids in between , in which the Waikato River is narrowed from a width of around 100 m in a gorge to 15 m. The water depth in the gorge is around 10 m. Starting from the first cascade, which is just under a meter, the water shoots down in the rapids over a height difference of 8 m to the valley, before falling over 11 m in the second cascade. With an average water throughput of around 220,000 liters per second, the flow varies between 32,000 liters and 270,000 liters per second, depending on the water level of the Waikato River .
tourism
The Huka Falls can be reached from Taupo City via the Huka Falls Road . There is a parking lot right next to a bridge that crosses the rapids in the middle of the gorge and from which a hiking trail leads on the eastern side to a viewpoint east of the lower waterfall.
Another tourist attraction is a jet boat ride to just below the lower waterfall.
First visit of the falls
The falls were long considered impassable, but in 1981 kayakers Greg Oke and Nick Kerkham were first successful at a lower water level.
