Humboldt Medal

The Humboldt Medal was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The medal was donated on February 13, 1975 in three stages. They were awarded for exemplary fulfillment of the planned tasks at universities and technical colleges. Also for long-term loyal service. The medal itself could be awarded to individuals, but also to up to collectives annually, with each level only being awarded once. Explicitly, the awards were distributed annually as follows:

  • to collectives
    • in gold: 3 times
    • in silver: 7 times
    • in bronze: 12 times
  • to individuals
    • in gold: 10 times
    • in silver: 20 times
    • in bronze: 30 times

Appearance and wearing style

The gold-plated , silver-plated or bronze medal with a diameter of 30 mm showed the two heads of Alexander von Humboldt and Wilhelm von Humboldt on its obverse , looking to the right when viewed from the observer. These are surrounded by the inscription: ALEXANDER AND WILHELM VON HUMBOLDT . The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows the state coat of arms of the GDR in the center and two inscriptions, the outer one of which on the edge of the medal: FOR EXCELLENT ACHIEVEMENTS and in the inner inscription: IN SOCIALIST HIGHER EDUCATION . The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest on a 25 mm × 13 mm red clasp, in which a miniature of a gilded open book could be seen in the center.
