Humps Island (from English hump 'hump, hump' in the plural form ) is an 800 m long island in the Erebus and Terror Gulf of the Antarctic Weddell Sea . It is located 6 km east of The Naze peninsula in the north of James Ross Island between the latter and Vega Island to the north, south of the northern foothills of the Antarctic Peninsula .
They were discovered by participants in the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901–1903) led by Otto Nordenskjöld . The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey surveyed the island in 1945. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named them in 1948. The descriptive name given to the two mountain peaks at their western end, which are reminiscent of the humps of a trample . While in Argentina the name was completely translated into Spanish as Islote Giboso , the island is known in Chile as Islote Humps .
