Barsberge dog cemetery

The Barsberge dog cemetery is a pet cemetery south of the Barsberge forester's house , southwest of the town of Seehausen in the Altmark in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The history of the cemetery goes back to 1878. This year, district forester Hahn, forester of the neighboring forester's house, put his dog Nimroth here. The dog had once brought the forester home from swampy terrain near the goldfish pond in thick fog and had therefore received his bread and butter from the forester . Hahn put a tombstone for his dog with the inscription Dem loyal Nimroth . It is believed that the facility is the oldest surviving dog cemetery in the world.

The cemetery, densely populated with large spruce trees, became known as the dog cemetery in later decades. A large number of burials followed, with gravestones or crosses being placed for many dogs. The cemetery is operated as the only public animal cemetery in Saxony-Anhalt. It is also possible to bury ashes of deceased pets on a burial mound with a memorial stone.
