The Hungaan are matrilineally organized, each clan is led by the oldest male descendant. This boss also preserves the ancestry symbols. The Hungaan villages used to have over a thousand inhabitants; they were divided into clans. These villages have broken up into smaller ones and are scattered among their other ethnic groups.

The Hungaan have a deeply rooted ancestor cult and make ancestral statues, which they keep in special shrines. In addition, small figurines made of bone and ivory are known of them, which are used for healing ceremonies.

They speak Hungaan or Huan, a Bantu language .
