The Hunterian Society is a London learned society of medicine founded in 1819 in honor of the Scottish surgeon John Hunter . It serves to promote medical knowledge and education.

history

After many surgeons , general practitioners and medical societies in London had moved from the East End to the West End , doctors practicing in the East End lacked opportunities to meet regularly. Doctors working at London Hospital , including surgeon Thomas Jeremiah Armiger, were particularly hard hit . Together with the family doctor William Cooke, he suggested the formation of a new medical society.

The Hunterian Society, founded on February 11, 1819, is the third oldest Medical Society in London after the Medical Society of London (founded in 1773) and the Medical and Surgical Society of London (founded in 1805). Its first president was Sir William Blizard (1743-1835). Thomas Bell was one of the founding members . The Society's meetings were held every second Wednesday at 10 St Mary-Ax.
