Mining operations

The bauxite ore is processed in the Pinjarra and Kwinana refineries. To the east is the Willowdale bauxite mine , which opened in 1984 and produces around 9 million tons of bauxite annually; it is processed into aluminum oxide in the Wagerup refinery .

10 million tons of aluminum are produced annually from the bauxite of both mines in fused- salt electrolysis systems. That is 47 percent of Australia's aluminum production. The aluminum production of Alcoa of Australia in Western Australia amounts to 13 percent of global aluminum production.

According to the mine operator Alcoa, an area of around 600 ha is recultivated every year .
