In Hvammur í Dölum is a historically important place in the community Dalabyggð in the west of Iceland .

Hvammur is a large farm and vicarage and is located in the south of the Klofningsnes peninsula , which in turn lies in the east of the Breiðafjörður fjord .

history

According to the land registry , the farm was founded by one of the few clan leaders of the Viking settlers in the 9th century, namely by Auður djúpuðga , or Auður the profound ones . Her descendants lived on the farm for centuries.

In the 12th century Hvamm-Sturla lived here , who in turn was to found the Sturlunger family , whose most famous offspring Snorri Sturluson was at times the most powerful lord in the country and an outstanding poet. In the small churchyard there is a memorial cross that the residents of Borgarnes had erected for the 800th birthday of the poet, who was born in Hvammur.

In the 17th century Árni Magnússon grew up here , who was particularly dedicated to the literature of his ancestors and who was supposed to establish the Arnamagna collection to preserve medieval writings .
