The Hy-Light is a car study for a four-seater motor vehicle with fuel cells as an energy supplier and electromotive front-wheel drive through wheel hub motors. Development of the vehicle began in 2002 and took place in cooperation between the Paul Scherrer Institute and the Michelin Research Center in Givisiez .

The key points of the development are the absence of emissions and everyday driving characteristics and performance. The vehicle was presented in 2004 at the Challenge Bibendum in the PR China . Acceleration from 0-100 km / h is completed in 12 seconds, the top speed is 135 km / h and the range, depending on the driving profile, is around 400 km. The empty vehicle weight is around 850 kg. Special features are:

  • Storage of hydrogen in the frame
  • Operation of the fuel cell with pure oxygen

The motor control allows regenerative braking, the braking energy is temporarily stored in capacitors and used again when accelerating. The fuel cells have a nominal output of 30 kW, but the energy storage in the capacitors means that up to 75 kW are available for acceleration for a short time. The Paul Scherrer Institute developed the fuel cell with an efficiency of around 60% and the capacitors, Michelin developed the electrics / electronics including the traction motors and the active chassis control.

Follow-up work and end of project

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI continued the development work. In May 2008, a joint venture with the company Belenos Clean Power AG began with the aim of developing a “Swiss fuel cell” and a drive train for a light passenger car for at least 4 people. The Belenos Clean Power AG was in 2008 by entrepreneur Nicolas Hayek Sr., the founder of the Swatch Group has been established to enable clean mobility. In 2011 the project was awarded the Watt d'Or , and in 2013 a project manager anticipated a breakthrough in the car market in 2017. In summer 2015, however, work on fuel cell cars was stopped and the company's development focus was placed on batteries.
