The Monti Iblei , also known as the Hyblean Mountains , are a mountain range in Sicily . It is located in the southeast of the island in the Free Community Consortia of Syracuse and Ragusa . The limestone mountains are partially covered by lava and are criss-crossed by deep gorges. The highest point is the 986  m high Monte Lauro southwest of Buccheri . The Tellaro , Dirillo and Cassibile rivers have their source in the Monti Iblei .

The name goes as Thucydides in his Peloponnesian War reported on Hyblon, a king of the Sicilians back that gave the area to the Greek settlers there, the city of Megara Hyblaea founded.

The baroque city of Palazzolo Acreide with the excavation sites of the ancient city of Akrai and the necropolis of Pantalica are worth seeing . Typical buildings are the dammusi , which were built around natural caves. A specialty of the Monti Iblei is the miele di carrubo , a honey made from the flowers of the carob tree.
