Eleven groups were invited to the documenta hybrid workspace, each working for ten days on a topic of their own choosing.

The orangery was converted into an open media studio . The task of this media studio was to create, collect, select, link, retrieve and distribute information. The main subjects were social, political and cultural issues. Hybrid WorkSpace provided the opportunity for comment, interview, discussion and presentation of the resulting data objects. The distribution outside the Orangery found through printed materials , Internet and radio programs instead. The Hybrid WorkSpace linked the materials brought in from outside with the existing ones. Geographically distant participants were able to participate in the dispute.

In 1998 the Hybrid WorkSpace was continued at the Berlin Biennale .
