The hydro base Saint-Louis was an important base of the Compagnie générale aéropostale for stopovers in airmail traffic from France via Africa to South America and was located near Saint-Louis , the capital of what was then the French colony of Senegal . It was located a few kilometers south of the Île de Saint-Louis in the lower reaches of the Senegal River on the banks of the Langue de Barbarie headland , which separates the river from the Atlantic.

From here, Jean Mermoz took off on May 12, 1930 with the Comte de la Vaulx seaplane for the first flight across the South Atlantic to Natal (Brazil) with 130 kg of mail on board.

Even if its use as an airmail base is long gone, it is kept alive with the name of the road that leads here, the Route de l'Hydrobase and the names of the tourist hotels that are located here, as well as a monument to Jean Mermoz.

Instead of an airmail base, a small fishing port has now been created.
