The Italian tree frog ( Hyla intermedia ) is a species of amphibian from the genus of tree frogs that is common in Italy south of the Po Valley, including Sicily . For a long time it was only considered a subspecies of the European tree frog ( Hyla arborea ).

features

Outwardly, the Italian tree frog is almost indistinguishable from the European tree frog . It has a slightly larger eardrum , and the dark flank strip often only begins behind the back of the eye.

distribution and habitat

The distribution area of the Italian tree frog includes the Apennine peninsula south of the Po plain with Sicily. The cryptic species Hyla perrini lives in the Po Valley and some adjacent areas (e.g. the southern tip of Ticino and the extreme west of Slovenia) , which was only separated from the Italian tree frog in 2018 based on genetic data. It is believed that the frog can also be found on the territory of the small state of San Marino and in the Vatican state . Hyla intermedia occurs at heights of sea level up to 1855 m. There is no overlap with the area of the European tree frog.

The species prefers wooded lowlands and spawns in small, sunny still waters.

Danger

The Italian tree frog is classified as Least Concern in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species because it has a relatively large range, is more adaptable to habitat changes and is believed to have a relatively large overall population. Regionally, however, the species is definitely endangered; in Switzerland, for example, it is classified as “endangered”. The main threat comes from increasing habitat loss and water pollution, especially from agrochemicals.
