Hymie Shertzer

Herman "Hymie" Shertzer , also Hymie Schertzer , (born April 2, 1909 in New York City , † March 22, 1977 ) was an American swing alto saxophonist , known for his time with Benny Goodman .

Life

Shertzer learned to play the violin at the age of 9 and the saxophone at the age of 16. From 1934 to 1938 he played with Benny Goodman , who initially only brought him because he also played the violin. He was also at the Carnegie Hall Concert. He then spent a year with Tommy Dorsey , again with Goodman from 1939 until 1940, then again with Dorsey and again with Goodman in 1943/44. He then became a studio musician at NBC in New York City. He played again in the soundtrack of the film The Benny Goodman Story (1955).

In addition to recordings at Goodman, he recorded with Billie Holiday / Teddy Wilson and Lionel Hampton in the late 1930s . He also recorded under his own name. At Goodman himself he was not presented as a soloist (that was reserved for Dave Matthews on the alto saxophone ).
