Hyperiidea are a subordination of flea crabs (Amphipoda).

features

They are characterized by their large eyes, which often make up most of the head, and their shape, which is often spherical.

Habitat and Distribution

In contrast to the other sub-orders of the amphipods, the Hyperiidea are only found in the sea, where they live in plankton and avoid being near the coast.

Hyperiidea can be found in many oceans . 69 species have been described in the Southern Ocean .

nutrition

Most species feed on salps and jellyfish or parasitize on them. Themisto gaudichaudii however, and some related species hunt copepods (copepods) and others driving in the plankton of a length up to their own body size.
