Hypocassida subferruginea is a beetle fromthe leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae). It belongs to the subfamily of the tortoise beetles (Cassidinae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 4.5–6 mm. In contrast to the genus Cassida , the representatives of the genus Hypocassida have pronounced antennae furrows next to the head. The top of the beetle is usually red-brown with a slight metallic sheen. However, there are also brown and yellowish specimens. The basal edge of the pronotum is blackish. The wing covers are covered with brown or black spots. The wing covers are also slightly depressed in the area of the basal triangle with 2 or 4 longitudinal ribs. The bottom and the head are black. The antennae and legs are yellow-brown.

distribution

The beetle species is widespread in Europe. It becomes rarer towards the north. The occurrence extends to North Africa and the Middle East . In England the species was still present before 1900 and is believed to have died out there.

Way of life

The beetles are often seen in fields and in wetlands. The main host plants of the polyphagous beetle species are bindweed , especially the field bindweed ( Convolvulus arvensis ) and the true bindweed ( Calystegia sepium ). In addition, the common yarrow is used as a larval fodder plant. The adult beetles can be seen from April to September.
