The nuthatch vanga ( Hypositta corallirostris ), also called coral beak vanga , is a passerine bird from the family of the vanga stranglers (Vangidae). It is the only species of the thus monotypical genus Hypositta .

features

The nuthatch vanga is a 13 to 14 centimeter tall and 13 to 16 gram bird. The beak is orange, the feet with the long first toe are gray. The male is blue overall, the base of the beak and reins are black. In the female, only the top to the neck and the head cap are blue, the rest is brownish, only the base of the beak is light.

The nuthatch vanga is a good climber and feeds on small insects , worms, beetles and small vertebrates.

distribution and habitat

The nuthatch vanga is endemic to the north and east of Madagascar . In the tropical and subtropical rainforest (lowland forest) it is mostly found below 1200 meters, sometimes up to 1800 meters, almost always together with other birds in so-called "mixed flocks", climbing up the tree trunk, then flying to the foot of the next tree.

Hazardous situation

The existence of the nuthatch vangas is not considered to be endangered ( Least Concern ).
