Subordination : Land snails (Stylommatophora)
Superfamily : Pupilloidea
Family : Hypselostomatidae
Scientific name
Hypselostomatidae
Zilch , 1961

The Hypselostomatidae are a family from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). These are mostly small to very small forms ("micromollusks"), including the (currently) smallest land snail Angustopila dominikae from southern China, with a shell height of only 0.86 mm.

features

The housings are usually very small (less than a millimeter to a few millimeters). They range in shape from tower-shaped to lenticular. The mouth is rounded and mostly separates from the previous handling more or less clearly, mostly rising slightly. The mouth rim is typically slightly curved outwards. The reinforcement of the mouth consists of a maximum of five teeth, one parietal, one columellar, one basal and two palatal teeth. However, there is a tendency towards reduction to the point of complete absence of teeth. In some genera there are numerous small nodules on the inside of the mouth. The navel can be narrow or wide. The housings are mostly thin-shelled.

Geographical distribution

The family members are found in southern China, Indochina, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Australia.

Taxonomy

The taxon of the family group was established in 1959 by Adolf Zilch as a subfamily of the Chondrinidae. Schileyko (2005) raises the taxon to the family rank and places the family in the superfamily Vertiginoidea. Bouchet and Rocroi (2007) do not recognize a superfamily vertiginoidea. They place the Vertiginidae in the superfamily Pupilloidea. They put the subfamily Hypselostomatinae in the synonymy of the subfamily Gastrocoptinae (family Gastrocoptidae). Schileyko (2011) takes up the family again, as does Jochum et al. (2014) and Páll-Gergely et al. (2015).
