International Association of Lawyers against Nuclear Arms

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Association of Lawyers against Nuclear Arms (IALANA) is an organization of lawyers founded in 1988 that is committed to the complete elimination of nuclear weapons , the strengthening of international law and the peaceful settlement of international conflicts.

Work / goals

IALANA supports the Advisory Opinion presented by the International Court of Justice to the General Assembly of the UN on July 8, 1996 , according to which the use and threat of nuclear weapons contradict international law. The organization continued to play a leading role in the planning of the Nuclear Weapons Convention, a program to ban the development, production, storage, transport and use of nuclear weapons.

The organization is an official supporter of the surveillance-critical data protection demonstration Freedom Instead of Fear , which has been taking place in Germany since 2006.

The members of IALANA are legal organizations or individual lawyers who support the goals of the organization. Non-lawyers' organizations can be granted observer status but are not entitled to vote. The highest body of IALANA is the General Assembly, which is composed of representatives from its member organizations. The presidents of the organization are the German lawyer Peter Becker and Takeya Sasaki , the managing director is Lucas Wirl .
