IBM Workplace

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

IBM Workplace is office software for company networks, comparable to the SUN ONE Webtop .

All marketing activities for the product were discontinued by the manufacturer IBM on December 11, 2007. Some parts of the code have been included in the IBM products "IBM Lotus QuickR", "IBM Lotus Connections" and others.

The "Productivity Tools" from IBM Workplace are based on the source code of OpenOffice.org Version 1.0. The code was fundamentally rewritten and now uses parts of the Eclipse framework.

In contrast to OpenOffice.org, IBM Workplace is not free software . According to IBM, it is not possible to return the further developed code to the OpenOffice.org project because it is technically too different from the original code base .

It is possible to use the OpenOffice.org code without publishing the further developments, as IBM uses the code on the basis of SUN's SISSL license . However, this forces IBM to be compatible with some of the core OpenOffice.org technologies; including the XML file format, from which the OpenDocument format was created. This standard is now also used by IBM Workplace from version 2.5.

Since the beginning of 2005, some IBM Workplace developers have been members of the technical committee responsible for the development and standardization of the OpenDocument format ( OASIS ).
