iCalamus is a frame-oriented layout and DTP program for Mac OS X , which is developed by the German software company invers Software. The name iCalamus is based on the Calamus program from the same manufacturer , with which, however, it is not document-compatible and allegedly did not even copy a line of source code. (Calamus is derived from the Latin name for a writing instrument made from reeds - see Kalamos .)

history

After invers Software had been marketing and further developing the DTP program Calamus for various computer platforms since 1996, the question arose after the acquisition of the Calamus program rights in 2001 at the latest whether Calamus should continue to be maintained as a native Atari program or ported to Windows or Mac OS . Porting was too costly and tedious for the developers. The idea arose to write a completely new DTP program natively in Objective-C for Mac OS X. The development of iCalamus 1.0 began in November 2003 and was completed with some delay in October 2006.

iCalamus is often compared to InDesign , PageMaker, and QuarkXpress in magazine reviews . Because of its similar name, it is often viewed as the new Calamus for Mac.

In March 2018, invers Software announced that it would cease business operations and thus sales and further development of iCalamus. In May 2018 it became known that the GraphicConverter manufacturer Lemke Software had taken over iCalamus. Lemke Software has been selling iCalamus on its own since then - both directly and via the Mac App Store - and wants to further develop the program.

Versions

Thanks to a special module for processing print jobs for photo books, calendars and other print objects from the Photographerbook company , it is possible with the free, unregistered version of iCalamus to also print photo books and calendars created in iPhoto . Normal iCalamus documents can be created in the unregistered version with certain restrictions. The registered full version currently costs 129 EUR.

iCalamus 1 supports as universal binary Mac OS X from 10.4.5. Version 2, released at the end of 2013, requires (since v2.14) at least OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) and is a 64-bit program. The program is available in eleven languages: Danish, German, English, French, Italian, Latvian, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Spanish, Czech. So far there is no way to load Calamus SL documents directly into iCalamus.

Specialties

iCalamus can transfer entire web pages to documents as PDF snapshots with a click of the mouse. Images can be masked in real time using grouped form frames. Like its namesake Calamus, iCalamus also supports real virtual copies of frames in which there is no mother-child relationship; all virtual frames change at the same time. All design elements can be set continuously and transparently. A vector tracer is integrated to create masks and run-around paths . iCalamus supports all PDF blending modes . ICC profiles of imported images are forwarded unchanged to the printout. ICalamus is the first DTP program to support the LinkBack protocol, with which external programs can be integrated into the program's interface like modules.
