IMAX Corporation is a Canadian cinema operator headquartered in Mississauga , Ontario . The company develops and produces 2D and 3D film cameras and projection systems based on horizontally guided 70 mm film . It also produces 2D and 3D films, markets them worldwide and operates over 1,000 movie theaters in 66 countries. The company was founded at the 1967 Expo in Montreal. The company's shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

On January 5, 2010, IMAX announced that the company, in partnership with Sony and Discovery Communications , would develop the technology for the first 24-hour 3D television network and help to build it in the USA. Sony was represented by its subsidiary Sony USA. Discovery Communications, Sony USA and IMAX were equal partners in the cooperation. The station went live in 2011 and aired until 2014.
