iWork is the office suite from Apple for the macOS , iPadOS and iOS operating systems . It contains the word processing program Pages , the presentation program Keynote and the spreadsheet program Numbers .

history

iWork came alongside the outdated AppleWorks , which was only temporarily ported to Mac OS X as the Carbon program , and which Apple no longer supports. A new office suite to replace AppleWorks had long been expected. However, Apple did not choose the commonly expected name iWorks , but the name iWork, which sounds like "I work" in English. iWork was formerly the name of a time tracking and invoicing program until Apple acquired the rights to the name.

The iWork package is not labeled with version numbers, but is given the two-digit year number as the version number ( e.g. iWork '09 ), as the individual programs are available in different version generations. From January 2009 iWork was also available at a reduced price as a package with Mac OS X and iLife .

With iWork.com , Apple also made an Internet-based supplement for iWork available, with which one could view and comment on documents together with other people. However, the documents could not be edited online.

At the beginning of 2010, Apple also presented an iWork version for the iOS operating system together with the iPad . Since May 2011, the programs have also been available for the iPhone and iPod touch .

iWork.com was discontinued on July 31, 2012 as part of the transition to iCloud . A year later, at WWDC 2013 , Apple presented a follow-up service integrated in iCloud, with which iWork-compatible formats can be edited directly in the web browser .

On October 22, 2013, Apple introduced new versions of iWork that have a clearer user interface and use a uniform file format under iOS and OS X. The range of functions of the programs has been reduced, however. B. Form letters are no longer possible, linked text fields are no longer supported and the range of functions for animation in presentations has been reduced.

In addition, Apple announced in autumn 2013 that the iWork package would in future be available free of charge when purchasing a new Mac or iOS device; since 2017, the corresponding apps have generally been available free of charge.

Since 2016, it has been possible for several people to work together on a document at the same time, as the owner shares the document with other people for editing via a link.

As of March 31, 2020, Apple has been running all iWork programs on all operating systems under the same version number.
