I am from Austria ( German  I am from Austria ) is a song by Rainhard Fendrich from 1989 that can be attributed to Austropop . In addition to the Radetzky March and the waltz on the beautiful blue Danube , the song is also one of the unofficial national anthems of the Republic of Austria .

Emergence

In an interview for the Kleine Zeitung in February 2015, Fendrich said that the song was created “out of an honest feeling of homesickness”. The video for the song was shot in 1990 on Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner .

In December 2011, the song was voted the most popular Austropop song in the ORF broadcast Austria chooses . In 2017, the song was voted first on Ö3 in Der Song dein des Lebens (The 1,000 Favorite Hits from 50 Years).

In another interview that Fendrich gave to News magazine in October 2016, he said that he wrote I am from Austria out of two feelings: “On the one hand, I didn't want to endure Austria abroad - I think it was still before the Waldheim affair - has this Nazi image. That hurt me. And on the other hand there was also a feeling of homesickness; actually I wanted to write some kind of crossover folk song. It's not an uncritical song either. In this respect, I am against the expression 'second national anthem' because it is too critical for it. A hymn is always an uncritical admiration for the country one comes from. "

In September 2017 the musical I am from Austria , based on several titles by Fendrich, was released.

During the COVID-19 pandemic , the Vienna police decided in 2020 to play the song every day at 6 p.m. from the loudspeakers of their patrol cars; in thanks to the citizens who are behaving in accordance with the pandemic. The piece was also played every day at this time on Radio Vienna .
