Ian Duncan (* 13. February 1973 ) is a British politician of the Conservative Party in Scotland .

Life

Duncan grew up in Alyth , Perthshire and attended Alyth High School there. He studied geology at the University of St. Andrews and received a PhD in paleontology from the University of Bristol . Prior to his political career, Duncan worked for BP , the Scottish Fishermen's Federation and the Scottish Refugee Council . From 2005 to 2011 he was Head of the EU Office in the Scottish Parliament and since 2014 he has been a Member of the European Parliament . There he is a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and Deputy Chairman of the Delegation for relations with the countries of South Asia.

In the 2017 early general election , Duncan ran in the constituency of Perth and North Perthshire . With a difference of only 21 votes, he was defeated by the incumbent SNP politician Pete Wishart on election day .
