Peter "Pete" Wishart (born March 9, 1962 in Dunfermline ) is a Scottish musician and politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Wishart was born in Dunfermline in 1962. He attended Queen Anne High School and Moray House College in Edinburgh . He lives in Perth and has one son. The trained social worker Wishart is active in various non-profit organizations. He is also a columnist for the monthly magazine The Scots Independent .

In 1981, Wishart was one of the founding members of the Big Country music group . Five years later he began his career as a keyboardist for the Scottish rock band Runrig , of which he was a member until 2001. In total, he has been heard on over a million records sold and is the only British MP to have appeared on the music show Top of the Pops . He is currently a member of the rock band MP4 formed by UK MPs that raise funds for charity.

Political career

After Wishart's party colleague John Swinney did not run for the 2001 general election because he had won a seat in the newly created Scottish Parliament in 1999, the SNP sent Wishart into the race as successor. Wishart won the North Tayside constituency mandate from Conservative Murdo Fraser and Labor candidate Thomas Docherty . Until 2007, Wishart Whip was the SNP faction.

After the constituency of North Tayside was dissolved in the wake of constituency reform in 2005 at the end of the electoral term, Wishart applied for the mandate of the newly created constituency Perth and North Perthshire , in which parts of the former constituency had been absorbed. He narrowly won the mandate in the 2005 elections and defended it in the 2010 and 2015 elections . With a difference of only 21 votes, Wishart maintained his mandate in front of the conservative challenger Ian Duncan in the 2017 early general election .
