Ian R. Gibbons

Ian Reid Gibbons (born October 30, 1931 in Rye , England, † January 30, 2018 in Orinda , California) was a British-American molecular biologist .

Gibbons graduated from Cambridge University with a bachelor's degree in 1954 and received his doctorate there in 1957 in biophysics. As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of Pennsylvania and from 1958 at Harvard University , where he was lecturer in 1962 and assistant professor in 1964. In 1967 he became an Associate Professor and in 1969 Professor at the University of Hawaii (Pacific Biomedical Research Center).

He is concerned with the mobility of cells, in particular the molecular organization of flagella and cilia .

In 1994 he received the EB Wilson Medal from the American Society for Cell Biology. In 2017 he received the Shaw Prize in Biology. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society .
