Iberia de Cordoba
Iberia de Córdoba was a Mexican football club that took part in the Campeonato del Centenario , the national championship of Mexico , in 1921 . The association was based in the city of Cordoba in the state of Veracruz .
history
The Olavarrieta brothers decided to export coffee on a large scale in 1915 . To this end, they hired a large number of young Spanish immigrants, some of whom were already living in Cordoba and some of whom were hired in the port city of Veracruz and brought to Cordoba. In the same year, this group created a football team, which they named Iberia . The team's partner, Santiago Olavarrieta, was appointed the first president.
Because they still lacked opponents at the beginning, they played their games within the club, but soon began to compete with clubs from Veracruz and neighboring Orizaba . The Veracruz State Championship was held for the first time as early as 1915/16 , and Iberia won a total of three times: 1922, 1926 and 1932.
Financial problems at Olavarrieta eventually led to the club being dissolved, whereupon many players joined other clubs, mainly in Veracruz and Orizaba.
