Ibn Bassam

Abū l-Hasan ʿAlī Ibn Bassām al-Shantarīnī ( Arabic أبو الحسن علي بن بسام الشنتريني, DMG Abū l-Ḥasan ʿAlī Ibn Bassām aš-Šantarīnī * before 1084 in Santarém , today Portugal ; † 1147 / 48 (542 H. )) was an Islamic historian and poet in Al-Andalus .

Ibn Bassam 1106-1111 Resulting main work during the Almoravids wrote -time in rhyme ad Ḏaḫīra fī Mahasin ahl al-ǧazīra ( 'treasury of the achievements of the people from the [Iberian half] island'), one of the main sources on history , Literature and culture during the mulūk aṭ-Ṭawā'if (Taifa kingdoms). The aḏ-Ḏaḫīra is the most important source for the lost al-Matīn of Ibn Ḥayyān, which it reproduces page by page, in addition to the rhymed letters of the Andalusian potentates.

The orientalist Reinhart Dozy based his story of the Moors in Spain (1861) in part on Ibn Bassam's account.
