Ibn Iyās

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Muhammad ibn Ahmad Ibn Iyās al-Hanafī ( Arabic محمد بن احمد بن إياس الحنفى, DMG Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Iyās al-Ḥanafī ; * 1448 ; † after 1522) was a historian and an important contemporary witness of the last years of the Mamluk rule in Egypt . His work serves as the primary source for the rise and fall of the more than two hundred and fifty years of Mamluk rule (see Burji-Mamluken ) over Egypt (and Syria) and the first years of Ottoman rule .

timeline

Ibn Iyās was the author of a multi-volume history of Egypt with the title Badāʾiʿ az-zuhūr fī waqāʾiʿ ad-duhūr (a partial German translation is entitled: "Everyday notes of an Egyptian citizen"), which comprises several thousand pages.

The last ruler of the Mamluks, Qansuh al-Ghuri , who like many of his soldiers died in the battle of Marj Dabiq against the overpowering Ottomans in late summer 1516 , is described as follows:

“He was tall, tall, with a big belly, white in color, with a round face, fat eyes and a booming voice. He was a majestic, dignified king who instilled respect and admiration in his audiences and was a pleasure to look at. And if it hadn't been for his cruelty (...), he would have been the best of the Circassian kings, yes, the best ruler of Egypt at all! "

An Arabic edition of the Chronicle of Ibn Iyās appeared in the Bibliotheca Islamica (vol. 5).
