The Ibsen Museum in Oslo is a literary museum for the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen .

The apartment

On the hundredth anniversary of the playwright's death, Ibsen's former apartment in Oslo - this is where he created his last dramas - was subjected to an extensive restoration and reopened on May 23, 2006 with its original furnishings. With financial support from donors and lenders, an authentic impression of the poet's home, in which he lived from 1895 until his death in 1906, was created. Furniture was returned, floors, walls and ceilings reconstructed after structural, archaeological investigations, supplemented by a range of information from historical sources. Tablecloths, curtains and door curtains, the materials of which had suffered damage over time, were rewoven to match the originals.

The apartment liquidation in 1914

When Suzannah Ibsen died in 1914, the apartment was closed and the inventory distributed. The city of Kristiania took over Henrik Ibsen's study and bedroom and deposited them in the Norwegian Open Air Museum . The District Museum in Skien , now the Telemark Museum , received the library and the Ibsen House, now the Grimstad City Museums , received the dining room. The rest of the inventory remained in the family's possession.

The actor Knut Wigert and the Ibsen family

In 1990 the actor Knut Wigert took the initiative and rented the apartment to make it accessible to the public. As a basis for further restoration and documentation, investigations were carried out in the most important rooms of the apartment. The Norwegian Folk Museum took over management in 1993. The study was returned, but limited funds and a lack of original items for the rest of the apartment meant that only the study could be fully presented.

The Ibsen family contributed greatly to the result. Ambassador Tancred Ibsen made a large number of his great-grandfather's personal items available on permanent loan or as gifts. His cousin, actor Joen Bille , helped track down and buy back original inventory for years.
