Iceberg (event)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Iceberg is a monthly event in Vienna with music from the 1980s. The main focus is on the so-called Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) and its English-language counterpart New Wave . With an annual number of around 20,000 visitors, it is one of the largest events of its kind in the German-speaking world.

history

On April 16, 1993 the first event took place in the Vienna Arena . The sound that was often considered outdated or even embarrassing at the time was played on a single floor. A short time later, the retro wave in music and fashion gave this regular event an unexpected surge in popularity. Due to the continuously long season, Iceberg is one of the longest continuously held popular cultural events in Austria.

Iceberg developed in 1993 to an alternative to the emerging techno scene, with major events near the Arena, the Gazometer - raves dominated the music events. During this time, Iceberg got so much popularity that several halls were used within the arena area.

particularities

The English-language title "Iceberg", which is always pronounced like "Iceberg" by the visitors, illustrates the desired mix of English and German-language music. The polar bear standing in front of an iceberg on the event logo is reminiscent of the NDW song Eisbär by the Grauzone group . The event subtitle Verschwende Deine Jugend is derived from the song of the same name by the Düsseldorf band DAF .

Over the years, the musical offer has been steadily expanded and recently up to four floors have been played. The program ranges from new wave and NDW to alternative , ska and punk rock to electroclash , big beat and drum and bass . In addition to the long playing time and the large number of guests at the event, the design of the flyers is particularly worth mentioning. In contrast to the usual situation, more space is given to current social, cultural or political events than to the actual line-up. According to the organizer, the flyers on the subject of the Iraq war and various local and national elections were particularly popular with the public .

DJ Elk was one of the resident DJs from the start and he still plays at this event today.
