Iceberg Slim

Iceberg Slim or Robert Beck , actually Robert Lee Maupin (born August 4, 1918 in Chicago , Illinois , † April 28, 1992 ) was an American pimp and writer .

Life

Iceberg Slim was his name as a pimp in the Chicago area. After serving seven times in prison , he renounced his criminal life and became a writer. He moved to California and called himself Robert Beck. He became one of America's most widely read black authors . His novels have sold more than twelve million times. His best-known work is his autobiography Pimp , which was also published in Germany.

The harsh language Iceberg Slim uses in his novels made him known mainly in the American hip-hop scene. The rappers Ice-T and Ice Cube named themselves after him. Ice-T's lyrics were heavily influenced by Iceberg Slim.
