Ida Mariette Helene Falbe-Hansen (née Hansen ; born February 19, 1849 in Odense ; † September 23, 1922 in Frederiksberg ) was a Danish teacher , philologist and suffragette . As a pioneer in the teaching of Swedish , she promoted Swedish literature in Denmark, and was also a board member of Dansk Kvindesamfund and chairwoman of Kvinderådet .

biography

Hansen was born in Odense in 1849 as the daughter of Johan Jørgen Hansen (1802–76) and Mariette Caroline Emilie Ernestine Basse (1817–83). From 1877 she completed a teacher training at the N. Zahles Skole in Copenhagen , where she worked as a teacher from 1878 to 1884. She then taught for a short while at Vældegaard Kvindeskole in Gentofte and then resumed her studies at the British Museum in London . In 1889 she returned to N. Zahles Skole, where she taught Swedish and Danish until 1899. In 1890 she was the first woman to graduate in Nordic philology from the University of Copenhagen .

From 1892 to 1911 Falbe-Hansen worked as an inspector in public schools and from 1910 to 1919 as chairwoman of Danske Pigeskole. During this period, she was also a board member of the Applied Sciences Examination and a ministry representative.

As a pioneering Swedish teacher, Falbe-Hansen published several textbooks that promoted Swedish literature in Denmark. Together with Elisabeth Grundtvig , she translated the works of the Swedish Nobel Prize winner Selma Lagerlöf .

In addition, Falbe-Hansen was active as a women's rights activist and was from 1883 to 1886 board member of Dansk Kvindesamfund and Kvindelig Læseforening from 1889 to 1896. In 1899 she was the chairman of Kvinderådet . As a literary historian, she has also published several books such as B. Den ny Eventyrbog (1873) and Gamle danske Folkeviser (1917).

Falbe-Hansen was awarded the Fortjenstmedaljen in 1914 and the Litteris et Artibus in 1915 .

Ida Falbe-Hansen died on September 23, 1922 in the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen . She was buried on Frederiksberg Ældre Kirkegård .
