Idebessos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Idebessos was an ancient settlement in the east of the Lycia region in Asia Minor in what is now Turkey, not far from Akalissos , the main town of a sympolitie to which Idebessos also belonged. Numerous Greek inscriptions from the ancient settlement area have been preserved, including honors of the polis for the emperors Caracalla and Gordian III.

Explorers of the 19th century included the remaining building remains of the ancient city in a settlement plan, including a theater and thermal baths, as well as ruins of a medieval basilica to the northeast of them . The Dioscuri played a role in the ancient pantheon of Idebessus . Later Idebessos was the bishopric, today the titular bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church.
