Idiom (idiom)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The idiom (from ancient Greek ἰδίωμα idíōma "peculiarity, peculiarity") is the peculiar language or way of speaking of a regionally ( regiolect ) or socially ( sociolect ) group or the language peculiarity of an individual speaker ( idiolect ). According to Eberhards (1910), idiom denotes "in general any language peculiarity and language peculiarity, then the sum of these language peculiarities within a language, hence the vernacular, the dialect in its peculiarity". It is "[...] merely a technical expression of linguistics and emphasizes the special linguistic characteristics of the vernacular and, in the more general sense, every peculiar independent language".
