Idiot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An idiotope is an epitope in the variable region of an antibody or a T cell receptor .

properties

An idiotope is part of the characteristic variable area ( idiotype ) of a certain antibody or T-cell receptor. Anti- idiotypic antibodies bind to an idiotope and can competitively inhibit binding between the antibody and the epitope in its antigen . In contrast to the idiotopes, the constant areas of antibodies or T-cell receptors are called allotopes . The hypothesis of the regulation of the antibody response by anti-idiotypic antibodies ( Network Hypothesis ) was put forward by Niels Jerne in 1974 .
